First and Second Class

First and Second Class

This is a very important class as the children move from the infants to First Class. To ease transition, the class teachers liaise and the infant teacher prepares the Senior Infants in term 3 for their impending transition.

Children grow to be more independent and learn to adapt to taking more responsibility for themselves. There are many evident changes - spending the full day in school, writing down their own homework, adapting to different groups and different regimes, learning the subjects at a higher level, learning tables, spellings, working independently for longer periods, etc. The good news is that they do adapt, some quicker than others.

Many of the activities done in Senior Infants are continued in First and Second class but in different ways. One of the ways oral language is promoted in this class is by using ‘Show and Tell’. The children proudly display and speak about what they bring in from home and the rest of the pupils listen and ask questions.

Holy Communion

The highlight of 1st & 2nd class is First Holy Communion. Children from second class receive their First Holy Communion in May every year. Each communicant has his/her own part to play in this very important celebration. The whole community join with them for this very special day. We are indebted to Mary Noonan – the local choir mistress and her choir for adding so much to our ceremony. Thank you Mary.
