3rd & 4th Class

3rd & 4th Class

This is yet another huge transition, but once again the teachers liaise to make it as smooth as possible. There are many changes for the children to adjust to – the new teacher, being at the start of the senior cycle, subjects are progressively more difficult, independent thinking is developing, homework format is different and in general a lot more is expected of them in terms of taking responsibility for their own work.

On the plus side of things, the children now partake in Science Week, Blue Star and other initiatives suitable for older children. For literacy station teaching and team teaching is used. All the comprehension strategies are developed as well as their writing genre. As part of numeracy, children are expected to use their knowledge to solve mathematical problems.

Science Week

Children work with 5th and 6th class to produce many different science experiments.

Blue Star

For the past number of years, children in 3rd & 4th have chosen a European country to focus on under the headings History, Geographical Regions, Industries and Landscape and Culture. European Day is then celebrated with some foods from that country as the children present their information to the rest of the school.

The Final Year Project

This project is led by 3rd & 4th class. The children – using recyclable materials, identify what they wish to make from the History part of the curriculum. To date, the children, under Jerry’s watchful eye made a catapult to be proud of, a ship (supposed to be like Christopher Columbus’s one!) and a castle!
